About Me
This site is my professional and personal portfolio, intended to provide a place for me to write as a 14-year technical writing leader and technology generalist.
I've spent most of my time in the technology field documenting complex infrastructures. Looking at my work history you might assume that is limited to just the products I worked on (MongoDB as a database and MinIO as S3 Storage). But my take on technical writing is that you can't write about what you don't understand, and the path to understanding is in trying the thing.
That's why for the entirety of my career, I have made it a point to build, execute, and interact with the full stack of software infrastructure contributing to the actual product I'm documenting. That means building apps using the SDK, deploying virtual machines with virtual drives for the software hosts, spinning up Kubernetes clusters to test Operators, and banging my head against Nginx configs to make sure it all connects like it would in production.
This site itself is an extension of that - I demanded of myself to actually go through the motions of building the SSG, deploying a local server, setting up DDNS, and eventually deploying this site (with Github Action redeployment) just to ensure that I know how it works and where it hurts.
This is a drum I've beaten on and off for a few years now, and if you've spent time on the Write the Docs Slack you've probably seen me say it: Technical Writers are as much Engineer as Writer. That becomes a critical differentiator, especially in an AI-focused ecosystem. What we know by doing helps ensure what we end up writing (or generating) isn't complete horseshit.
I studied Literary Journalism at UC Irvine, which is an odd degree for someone who ended up in developer docs, but it turns out that caring about how something reads matters regardless of what the something is. I'm a community moderator at Write the Docs and spoke at their 2025 Portland conference. I built this site — and the static site generator that runs it — largely to have somewhere to write things that aren't documentation.
